I am somehow got the mumps either in my first or second grade (so, either December 1964 or 1965, or possibly 1966 if in third grade). I also know that it was either shortly before Christmas break or in the early days of the break. I recall this because I remember us living in our new house and chose to drive into town to look at Christmas lights in various neighborhoods. We probably did this in other years, but I recall my mom trying to find something to distract me. There was no vaccine until the 1970s, but now there are some who won't take it. For me, I was lucky I didn't get any of the side effects, but I know that I was quite miserable for at least a week.
I don't recall where we looked for colorful homes, but we tried various parts of town and we certainly found some well decorated homes. It was a nice distraction for me. [At photo of decorated home]
